2024 SARW YOUTH SAILING REGATTA
Scholastic & C420 (Trap & Spin) Classes
April 6th & 7th 2024

1. RULES
The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing.
2. ENTRIES
2.1 The Sailors must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in the Notice of Regatta.
2.2 Competitor Waivers will need to be completed prior to sailing in the event. The decision to sail or to compete in any race will be the sole responsibility of the competitor RRS 3.
3. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS
Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located at the St. Augustine Yacht Club.
4. CHANGES TO THE SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Will be posted than no later than 10 minutes after the Skippers Meeting. Oral changes to these SI’s may be given on the water by hail from the RC Signal vessel in accordance with RRS 90.2(c). The RC Signal vessel will display code flag L with one sound and communicate the changes before the next warning signal.
5. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE
5.1 Signals made ashore will be displayed from the docked Race Committee Signal Boat. A repeat of the signal will be posted at the St. Augustine Yacht Club.
5.2 If a postponement is signaled ashore the warning signal will be made not less than 45 minutes after AP is lowered.
6. SCHEDULE
All times below are tentative – Please check Regatta Notice Board for updates.

0900 – 1015: Check-In/Registration – St. Augustine Yacht Club
1010: Mandatory Support Boat meeting
1030: Mandatory Skipper’s Meeting
1100: Launch and tow to the racecourse
1155: First warning
Last race cannot start after 1600
• Sunday, April 6th
0845: Launch and tow
0955: First warning
No race will be started after 1400.
Awards, Pizza, and Desert immediately following
De-rigging at the St. Augustine Yacht Club.
7. CLASS FLAGS
Class Flags will be displayed at the skipper’s meeting.
8. RACING AREA
8.1 The racing area will be on the Matanzas River in front of the Castillo de San Marcos, North of the Bridge of Lyons. The location of each course will be described at the skipper’s meeting.
8.2 An alternate course for one or both fleets may be used in the event of unfavorable conditions and will be located between the Conch House (Salt Run entrance) and the Inlet.
9. COURSES & MARKS
9.1 It is the RC intention to run W/L courses starting both fleets at the same time and course and will be scored separately. Should we need to use the Trapezoid Course, the finish lines will be separated as noted in 11.a and 11.b.
9.2 The attached diagrams show the courses, the course designations, the marks in order, and the rounding direction of each.
9.3 Windward/Leeward Course will be designated with a “W” followed by the number of laps; i.e. W/L2 is a W/L course with 2 laps. Course diagram listed below in appendix.
9.4 Trapezoid Course will be designated with a “T” followed by the number of laps i.e. “T2” will be Trapezoid course with two outer laps. “T1” will be a standard Trapezoid course one outer lap. Scholastic (main/jib class) will sail the inner leg only, with no reaching marks, (therefore W/L on the inner leg of the Trapezoid). Course diagram listed in appendix.
9.5 Gates will be used for leeward roundings. Race committee reserves the right to change course to a single leeward mark that will be rounded to port.
10. STARTS
10.1 Prior to the first race of each day competitors shall check in by sailing on starboard tack past the stern of the signal boat and hailing their sail number.
10.2 The starting line will be between the staff displaying an orange flag on the RC signal boat and the nearby yellow starting buoy. Boats in classes that are not in sequence shall stay clear of the starting area.
10.3 Races will be started in accordance with RRS 26. Both fleets will start at the same time.
10.4 The RC intends to hail premature starters. Failure of the RC to hail a premature starter or a competitor’s failure to hear such a hail shall not be grounds for redress; the skipper is solely responsible for starting in accordance with the RRS.
11. FINISHING
11.1 For W/L courses, all fleets will start and finish on the same course.
11.2 For a Trapezoid course, The finishing line for the Scholastic (main/jib) 420 fleet will be between the green flag on the RC signal boat and the nearby green finishing mark, windward of committee boat. Boats shall not sail through the finish line unless they are finishing.
11.3 For the Trapezoid course, The finishing line for the C420 (trap/spin) fleet will be between the purple flag on the RC signal boat and the nearby purple finishing mark, leeward of the committee boat. Boats shall not sail through the finish line unless they are finishing.
12. TIME LIMIT
12.1 The time limit for each race will be 60 minutes.
12.2 Boats racing more than 15 minutes after the first boat sails the course and finishes will be scored TLE and will receive two more points than the last finisher, but not more than DNF. This changes Rule 35, 63.1, A4, A5 and adds to A11.
13. PROTESTS
13.1 Competitors intending to protest must inform the RC immediately after finishing the race and before communicating with coaches, parents, or spectators. Written protests shall be delivered to the protest committee within 40 minutes of the relevant RC signal boat docking. The official docking times will be displayed on the official notice board and forms will be available from the Race Committee Signal Boat on shore.
13.2 A list of protests will be displayed within 30 minutes after the protest time expiration. Hearings will be held as soon as possible after racing each day. The location of each hearing will be noted on the official notice board.
14. SCORING
14.1 The low Point System of Appendix A of the RRS will apply, except that each boat’s worst score(s) will be discarded for every six (6) races completed. This changes rule A2.
14.2 One completed race shall constitute a regatta.
15. ENVIRONMENTAL & SAFETY
15.1 Competitors shall not discharge trash into the water. Any competitor who throws trash into the water is subject to disqualification. Such disqualification will be posted on the official notice board and any competitor so disqualified MAY NOT request redress.
15.2 A boat retiring from a race shall notify an RC vessel before leaving the racing area if possible. Sailors are not permitted to leave the racecourse unaccompanied. All racers retiring from a race must approach a safety boat and get under tow to return to their launching place.
15.3 Support, spectator, representative, and coach boats shall stay well clear of the course, from the warning signal of that race to the finish, while any race is in progress unless rendering assistance to any vessel in danger. If a competitor receives such assistance they shall retire. After the finish coaches and spectators shall not communicate with competitors until they are well clear of the finish area. There is no coaching of competitors while they are on the racecourse. No wake is permitted within 200 yards of the racecourse while boats are racing. Coaches, support persons, spectator boats captains shall be tethered to the ECoS/kill switch at all times. Violation of any part of this section may result in a penalty being assessed up to and including disqualification of the competitor(s) associated with the vessel violating this instruction.
16. TROPHIES
Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 finishers overall for each fleet.
